Happy February, Happy Black History Month!!
If you’re like me, this year you are looking for ways to commemorate and honor our ancestors. Whether we are learning about different parts of Black History that we may not have known before, or cooking dishes passed down in your family or a friends’ family for generations, it just feels good to honor our heritage as African-Americans and Black people.
So here are a few ways you can celebrate:
- Cook a Soul Food or Creole dish
Black Eyed Peas and/or Jerk Chicken are both recipes that have a lot of history in them. You can use my recipes and look up the history of both of these delicious meals.
2. Watch a historic Black movie
Judas and the Black Messiah is a new movie that explains the life of Fred Hampton a young and famous Black Panther who was ultimately murdered by the FBI and police. There are also many other Black historic movies to watch as well.
3. Buy from and support Black owned businesses in your area.
4. Donate to organizations that help and support Black communities. Here are a few in Los Angeles, you can look for more at this link: https://www.libertyhill.org/2020/06/02/los-angeles-organizations-committed-to-black-lives
Los Angeles Black Worker Center
5. Take in art from Black artists, books, movies, music, etc.
6. Attend or host a Black culture event in your area.
You can visit https://www.blackculturalevents.com for some in-person or online/streamed events.
No matter what you do in honor of Black History Month, just remember to do it with love and think of those who came before us.
